Multiple Taliban attacks on police checkpoints in southern Afghanistan's Helmand Province have left 10 police officers dead and 16 wounded.

Mohammad Ismail Hotaki, director of the province's Joint Coordination Office, said on May 24 that three checkpoints were captured in the early morning attack in Sangin district and that the Taliban assault was continuing.

"We have asked for reinforcements to take back control of the checkpoints," he said.

The attacks come amid a monthslong Taliban offensive in Helmand that has frequently targeted Afghan police.
