Pakistani security forces have rescued a provincial lawmaker who was abducted in an area bordering Afghanistan and held captive for six months.

The rescue operation on December 8 freed Rana Jamil Hassan Khan -- a member of the governing assembly of Punjab province who was kidnapped by an armed group in May near the town of Sargodha.

Khan had been travelling to Islamabad when he was kidnapped along with his wife.

The gunmen freed Khan’s wife within hours of their abduction.

A senior official in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government said the December 8 rescue operation was in the Khyber tribal region that borders Afghanistan.

He did not provide specific details about where the area and declined to comment on whether authorities had paid a ransom for Khan’s release.

Authorities also did not disclose which group had kidnapped the lawmaker.
