Americans with telescopes, cameras and protective glasses staked out viewing spots along a corridor from the northwest to the southeast, for the first total solar eclipse seen in the United States since 1918. One of the popular early places to see the moon totally blot out the sun on August 21 was in Oregon, as NASA commentators marveled at the sight along with the rest of the country.
