Afghan Army Reports Heavy Taliban Casualties In Ghazni

By RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan

GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- Local and military officials say more than 100 Taliban militants were killed and nearly 90 others were injured in a major army offensive in Afghanistan's central Ghazni Province.

Military spokesman Nazeef Sultani said on May 9 that six Pakistani nationals were among the insurgents killed in the offensive, which began earlier this week. The casualty figures could not be independently verified.

Sultani said there were no casualties among Afghan troops and that the offensive in the volatile province has now "intensified."

A Taliban statement rejected the casualty figures released by Afghan officials and accused Afghan forces of firing at civilians.

Several villagers in the Gailani district, where the clashes are taking place, have complained that Taliban militants are occupying their houses by force.

The ongoing clashes have prompted some local residents to flee their homes.
