Officials say at least three people have been killed and five others injured in a NATO air strike in a remote village in Afghanistan's eastern Logar Province.

Din Mohammad Darwesh, a spokesman for the Logar governor, said the strike happened in the village of Ab Josh in the early hours of December 26.

Darwesh said the U.S.-led coalition told the governor's officers that the victims were Taliban insurgents.

The spokesman added, however, that local residents said the victims were civilians protecting their land from attack by Kuchi nomads.

A delegation has been sent to the area to investigate.

The strike comes as the United States is pulling the majority of its combat troops out of Afghanistan. Some 13,500 U.S. and NATO troops will remain in the country for training and battlefield support.
