A top Afghan official has escaped unharmed from a suicide bombing attack in the capital, Kabul.

Police said the bomber detonated his vehicle alongside the armored car of Mohammad Massom Stanikzai on June 21.

While Stanikzai was not harmed, police said one civilian had died and several more were injured in the bombing.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Stanikzai is a senior official in the High Peace Council, a government body tasked with overseeing peace talks with the Taliban insurgency.

The attack comes ahead of planned protests in Kabul later on June 21 in support of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah's decision to drop out of the race over allegations of mass fraud.

He has called for the electoral bodies to halt counting votes and suggested the United Nations intervene.
