Afghan officials said a bomb blast at a police checkpoint in the southern city of Kandahar has killed three people and wounded 13 others.

The explosion on July 5 was caused by a bomb strapped to a motorcycle, said Samim Khpolwak, the spokesman for the provincial governor.

Local officials said the attack was apparently carried out by a suicide bomber.

According to police, the attack took place late in the evening, shortly after the iftar -- a fast-breaking meal during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

A police spokesman said the dead included two civilians and one police officer, while most of the injured were civilians.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

The Taliban routinely plant bombs to target Afghan and foreign security forces, though civilians are frequently killed instead.
