The captain of Afghanistan's national cricket team has stepped down, citing the team's recent performance and his own lack of form as an athlete.

Mohammad Nabi announced the news on Twitter late on April 19 and shared the resignation letter he had sent to the Afghanistan's Cricket Board.

Nabi, 30, said he intends to continue his career in the sport as a batsman.

Nabi was appointed captain in March 2013.

Under his captaincy, Afghanistan finished second in the World Cricket League Championship in October 2013, sealing a place in its first World Cup.

In the 2015 World Cup, Afghanistan finished sixth in Group A, with its only win coming against Scotland.

Cricket is the most popular sport in Afghanistan.

Many national team members say they learned cricket as children in Pakistan, which sheltered millions of Afghan refugees fleeing decades of war in their country.
