An Afghan official says a U.S. drone strike has killed seven militants near the Pakistani border in the eastern Kunar Province.
The provincial police chief, Abdul Habib Sayedkheli, said the strike on May 7 targeted a group of militants that had been operating in the region for the past year.
He says the leader of the group and his son were among the dead. All seven had been traveling in a vehicle at the time of the strike.
Kunar is a particularly volatile region of Afghanistan, where militants — many affiliated with the Taliban movement — have a strong presence along the eastern provinces bordering Pakistan.
