Officials say 11 people have died after a large fire at a natural gas terminal in the western Afghan city of Herat.

A local government spokesman told RFE/RL that six others were injured in the incident, which occurred late on August 24.

The fire was preceded by a series of loud explosions at the gas terminal.

Photos posted online showed a large fire lighting up the night sky.

It was still not clear whether the explosions were an accident or the result of an attack in Afghanistan's third-largest city.
