Kabul Honors Slain Afghan Soldiers With Ceremony

Afghan honor guards stand next to coffins as they pay tribute to soldiers who were killed in an Taliban attack in Kunar province.
KABUL -- Afghanistan's Defense Minister has paid tribute to at least 20 Afghan soldiers who were killed on February 23 in the deadliest single attack involving the Afghan National Army in at least a year.

The defense minister, General Bismullah Khan Mohammadi, presided over an honor-guard ceremony in Kabul overlooking a long line of flag-draped coffins of the slain soldiers on February 24.

Mohammadi pledged at the ceremony that Afghan security forces will continue to stand up to threats posed by Taliban militants.

The soldiers were killed at a remote army outpost near Pakistan's border in the eastern province of Kunar when hundreds of heavily armed Taliban fighters stormed the position.
