Eleven Dead After Taliban Gunmen Storm Police Station

Officials say 11 people, including five militants, were killed December 8 after a suicide bomber and gunmen stormed a district police chief's office in southern Afghanistan.

Samim Khepolwak, the spokesman for the provincial Kandahar governor, said "the bomber detonated his explosives at the entrance gate of the Maywand district police chief's office."

Khepolwak said four other attackers were killed in clashes with security forces that lasted for more than two hours.

Four civilians, one policeman, and one army officer were also killed in the attack.

A Taliban spokesman in southern Afghanistan, Qadri Yusuf Ahmadi, claimed responsibility.

Foreign troops are winding up their combat mission at the end of the month and the Taliban has again stepped up attacks across the country, as well as in the capital, Kabul.
