Afghan security personnel gather at the site of a Taliban attack Arghandab district close to the southern city of Kandahar.

The Taliban launched an attack on a police headquarters in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, killing one soldier and wounding six other people.

Samim Khpolwak, the spokesman for the provincial governor, told RFE/RL’s Radio Free Afghanistan that the attack occurred in the morning of November 19 in Arghandab district.

The five attackers were killed in the attack.

Three police officers and three civilians were also wounded.

Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani said one of the attackers detonated his vehicle laden with explosives, while the four other militants tried to enter the compound.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghan government forces have struggled to fend off the Taliban since the withdrawal of most international troops last year.
