Afghan media have reported that the Afghan president's elder brother is quitting the April 5 presidential race.
Qayum Karzai has reportedly decided to throw his support behind the country's former foreign minister, Zalmai Rasul.
Rasul's campaign team told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that an official announcement on the issue was expected on March 6.
President Hamid Karzai has not publicly backed any candidate.
He has publicly said he didn't support his brother's candidacy, and that he had urged his brother not to run.
A total of 11 candidates were officially registered to take part in the presidential race.
Hamid Karzai who has served two terms in office, is not eligible to run.
