KABUL -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai has nominated Mohammad Yunis Qanooni to succeed Vice President Mohammad Qasim Fahim, who died suddenly on March 9.

Speaking to RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan, Karzai spokeswoman Adela Raaz confirmed that the decision was made at a meeting between Karzai and other high-ranking officials, as well as former mujahedin leaders and members of Fahim's family.

Raaz said the decision is expected to be approved by the Afghan parliament "soon."

Qanooni is a key member of the Jamiat-e Islami party and was a close ally of Fahim during the Northern Alliance's resistance against the Taliban between 1996 and 2001.

Qanoni also served as interior minister, education minister, and parliament speaker. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 2004.
