Afghan officials have begun an investigation into claims of fraud in the runoff presidential election made by candidate Abdullah Abdullah.
Abdullah demanded on June 15 the firing of Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail, head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), after alleging that Amarkhail tried to take unused ballots from IEC headquarters on election day on June 14.
The Interior Ministry said an investigation with the IEC into Abdullah's charge is being carried out and "findings will come out soon."
Vote counting is under way in the election pitting former Foreign Minister Abdullah against former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani.
Abdullah's allegations come despite a call by the UN for candidates to allow election officials time to count votes and look into fraud complaints.
Preliminary results are due on July 2 and final results will be announced on July 22.
