Officials say Taliban fighters have killed at least four police officers in an attack on a checkpoint in northern Afghanistan.

Faqir Mohammad Jowzjani, the police chief for Jowzjan province, said the attack occurred on December 3.

Provncial police spokesman Abdul Manan Raoufi said the attack took place in Darzab district in the early hours of hte day.

Raoufi says a local police chief was among the casualties.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghanistan has seen an increase in Taliban attacks since the government signed military agreements with the United States and NATO allowing some 12,000 foreign soldiers to remain in the country after the 13-year combat mission formally ends on December 31.
