Interactive Map: Factional Rifts In The Taliban Command

After the death of Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar in 2013, the group's chain of command evolved in response to factional divisions between its Quetta Shura leadership council and the Haqqani network. Mullah Omar’s eldest son, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, now oversees military operations in 13 provinces of the Taliban’s “Western Zone.” Sirajuddin Haqqani, the head of the Haqqani network, commands fighters in 21 provinces that form the “Eastern Zone.”
