New Afghan Leaders Meet NATO Chief On Europe Visit

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani makes a statement prior to a meeting at the NATO headquarters in Brussels on December 1.

President Ashraf Ghani has expressed hope that NATO’s new mission in Afghanistan would bring stability and prosperity to the Afghans and security to the world.

Ghani was speaking at a news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at NATO headquarters in Brussels on December 1, as foreign combat troops are withdrawing from Afghanistan before an end of 2014 deadline, leaving behind a smaller support mission.

Stoltenberg said that “for over a decade, NATO allies and partners have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Afghan people.”

Ghani and Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah traveled to Europe to showcase their plans to foster peace and revive the economy.

On December 2, they will attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers who are expected to approve the alliance’s new mission.

Ghani and Abdullah will also attend the London Conference on Afghanistan on December 4.
