The U.S. Army says it has begun questioning U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl about his disappearance in Afghanistan that led to him being a Taliban captive for five years.

Bergdahl's lawyer, Eugene Fidell, said on August 6 that his client is cooperating with the investigation, which is taking place at an army base in Texas where Bergdahl works.

An Army spokeswoman says Bergdahl was advised of his rights by investigators.

The investigation will determine whether Bergdahl will be prosecuted for desertion or if he faces any other disciplinary action.

Bergdahl, 28, had been receiving care since returning to the United States from U.S. military facilities in Germany on June 13.

He was released by the Taliban on May 31 in a controversial swap for five Taliban prisoners being held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
