Reports from Kabul say a powerful explosion has struck near a busy shopping district of the Afghan capital, killing at least five people.

Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi said the blast occurred in the parking lot of the Justice Ministry on May 19.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, vowing to kill more "slave" judges and prosecutors.

The Taliban also said it was behind a suicide car bombing that targeted a convoy of vehicles with foreign security forces near Kabul airport on May 17.

The attack killed a member of the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL) and two teenage Afghan girls.
