At Least Three Killed In Militant Attack On Afghan Midwife Training Center

Smoke rises from an area where explosions and gunshots were heard in Jalalabad on July 28.

Officials said at least three people were killed when militants attacked a midwife training center in eastern Afghanistan.

The July 28 attack occurred in the city of Jalalabad, targeting what appeared to be a dormitory for midwife trainees.

RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan quoted witnesses as saying that a suicide bombing had taken place in the area.

Attaullah Khogyani, the provincial government spokesman, said one of the attackers died after detonating a bomb and the second was killed after a several-hour standoff with police.

He said at least seven people were wounded in the attack.

Provincial health department spokesman Inamullah Miakhil confirmed its midwife center had been attacked.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but both the Taliban and Islamic State extremists have carried out numerous attacks in Nangarhar Province.

The last major attack in Jalalabad happened on July 11 when gunmen attacked an education department compound in the city, killing at least 11 people.
