Britain Says Kabul Evacuation Extension 'Unlikely' But Will Still Push For It

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace says it is “unlikely” the evacuation operation from Kabul airport will be extended past the August 31 deadline.

U.S. President Joe Biden will face pressure to extend the deadline to evacuate thousands seeking to flee the Taliban in Afghanistan when he holds talks with G7 leaders at a virtual meeting on August 24.

The Taliban has warned that the August 31 deadline for the international withdrawal is a "red line" for the militant group.

Wallace told Sky News he was doubtful there would be an extension "not only because of what the Taliban has said, but also if you look at the public statements of President Biden, I think it is unlikely."

But he added, "It is definitely worth us all trying and we will."

The evacuations from Kabul airport have gained momentum as the United States and its allies rush to evacuate their citizens and at-risk Afghans in a massive logistical operation that has led to chaotic scenes just over a week since the Taliban captured the capital.
