Drone Strike Kills At Least 13 In Pakistani Tribal Region

A U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's tribal area has killed at least 13 people.

A senior Pakistani official, speaking under condition of anonymity from Miranshah, the biggest town in North Waziristan, said the strike early July 16 targeted a militant compound in the Zoi Saidgal area.

The official said many militants have been moving to the Zoi Saidgal area since Pakistani government forces launched an offensive in North Waziristan in late May.

Another Pakistani security official said up to 20 people had been killed, including 12 ethnic Uzbeks, while a meeting was taking place at the compound.

The U.S. government has been pressing Pakistan for years to launch security operations into the restive tribal areas that border Afghanistan, which have become havens for militants who carry out attacks both in Afghanistan and in Pakistan.
