Pakistani Jets, U.S. Drones Kill Some 50 People In Tribal Areas

Attacks by Pakistani warplanes and a U.S. drone strike have killed at least 50 people in Pakistan's tribal area.

Pakistani jets on July 16 hit targets in the Shawal Valley in North Waziristan, which borders Afghanistan.

Pakistani military officials claimed some 35 suspected militants were killed in the strikes on remote militant hideouts in the valley.

The military said members of Pakistan's Taliban were in the Shawal Valley, including ethnic Uzbek, Chechen, and Arab fighters.

Earlier on July 16, a U.S. drone strike targeted a militant compound in the Zoi Saidgal area of North Waziristan, killing at least 15 people.

One Pakistani security official said some of the militants at the compound at Zoi Saidgal were also ethnic Uzbeks.

Pakistan military and security officials claim a government offensive started in North Waziristan in late May has chased militants into these remote areas.
