Five Killed, Hundreds Displaced By Floods In Afghanistan

Local officials in Afghanistan say five people have been killed and hundreds more displaced as a result of floods in the north.

Four of the victims were residents of Samangan Province, which was hit by floods and torrential rains late on May 1.

Another villager was killed in neighboring Baghlan Province.

Samangan Governor Khairullah Anosh said hundreds of families have left their homes for higher ground to escape the floods.

Floods in both provinces have destroyed dozens of mud-wall houses and damaged roads and farmland, as well as killing livestock.

Last months, two days of heavy rains and floods killed more than 100 people and displaced thousands more in Afghanistan's northwest.
