Pakistani Mountaineers Climb World's Second-Highest Mountain For First Time

A team of Pakistani climbers has reached the top of K2, the world's second highest mountain, marking a first for that country.

The 8,611-meter-tall mountain is considered extremely challenging, with only around 300 climbers making it to the top since it was first captured 60 years ago. Many climbers have died on the descent.

The six climbers reached the summit at around 2:00 a.m. local time.

Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, has been summited by nearly 3,500 climbers.

K-2 sits on the Pakistani-Chinese border.

Pakistani officials hope the historic climb will revive tourism in the area.
