The United States says all U.S. forces will be withdrawn from the NATO transit center in Kyrgyzstan in July.

Nisha Desai Biswal, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian affairs, said in Bishkek on April 3 that most equipment and military personnel had already left the transit center at Manas airport.

She was speaking after meeting with Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev.

Biswal added that Washington respected Kyrgyzstan's decision to close the center.

The center has been used as a transit base for troops and supplies going to or from Afghanistan. It hosted about 1,000 U.S. soldiers, as well as U.S. aircraft.

Kyrgyzstan's parliament decided last year that the transit center must close by July 11, 2014.

NATO is withdrawing its combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of this year.
