NATO Soldier Killed In Southern Afghanistan


A NATO soldier has been killed in an attack in southern Afghanistan.

The alliance provided no other details on the incident, which occurred on June 25.

Eleven NATO service members have been killed so far in June. Eight of the fatalities were Americans.

So far this year, 40 NATO troops have died in Afghanistan, including 29 Americans.

All foreign combat troops are scheduled to be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of this year.

Southern Afghanistan is a Taliban stronghold.

On June 25, Afghan security forces fought back against some 800 Taliban militants in southern Helmand Province.

Provincial governor spokesman Omar Zwak said at least 100 militants, 21 Afghan soldiers, and 40 civilians have been killed in five days of fighting.
