Two Dead, 50 Injured In Earthquake In Southern Pakistan

Reports from Pakistan say an earthquake in the south of the country has killed at least two people and injured more than 50 others.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor -- with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 -- struck some 12 kilometers north of the Nawab Shah district in Sindh Province on May 9.

The quake was followed by two aftershocks.

The deputy commissioner of the district, Aleem Lashari, said dozens of houses have been damaged.

He said an emergency has been declared in hospitals in Nawab Shah, while educational institutions are closed.

Pakistan is often hit by earthquakes. In September 2013, a 7.7-magnitude quake struck Baluchistan Province, killing at least 376 people and leaving around 100,000 people homeless.
