At Least 18 Killed By Factory Roof Collapse In Pakistan

Pakistani rescuers move a victim through the rubble of a collapsed factory on the outskirts of Lahore on November 4.

The roof of a factory has collapsed near Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore, killing at least 18 workers and leaving about 150 trapped under rubble.

Rescuers were cutting through steel bars to look for survivors after the disaster in an industrial district about 20 kilometers south of Lahore on November 4.

Lahore's chief administrator, Mohamed Usman, said at least 11 bodies had been recovered and the death toll was expected to rise because of the large number of people who were trapped.

More than 70 injured people were being treated at two nearby hospitals late on November 4.

Pakistani television channels reported that the building had been partially damaged by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that hit the region last week, killing more than 400 people across three countries.

Other reports noted that construction work was under way at the factory.

But provincial government spokesman Zaheem Qadri said it is too early to determine the cause of the collapse.
