Pakistan Says Air Strikes Kill Some 30 Militants

Pakistani intelligence officials said air strikes in the Tirah Valley of northwestern Khyber region have killed some 30 militants from the group Lashkar-e-Islam.

A statement from Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations said the attacks were carried out during the morning of March 25.

Pakistani media outlet Dawn cited sources as saying Lashkar-e-Islam spokesman Salahuddin Ayubi was among those killed.

Pakistani military and security forces have been attacking militant positions in the Tirah Valley for days as part of a wider offensive in the tribal areas near the border with Afghanistan.

Reuters news agency cited intelligence sources as saying scores of alleged militants and seven Pakistani soldiers have been killed.

Militants have used Pakistan's mountainous tribal areas for years as safe havens for launching attacks against Pakistani forces and across the border into Afghanistan.

Security forces claimed to have killed eight militants in the Orakzai tribal area recently though they did not say exactly when.
