Pakistani security officials say army helicopters have killed five militants in the north-western tribal region.

The military said that the attack Sunday in the Bara area of the Khyber tribal region targeted the hideout of Mullah Tamanchey, who directed the assault against a convoy carrying a polio vaccination team and security forces on Saturday in which 12 people were killed.

The attack comes the day after the Pakistani Taliban announced a one-month ceasefire to facilitate the resumption of peace talks suspended by the government last month.

Pakistani Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan has warned that the army will respond to militant attacks.
