Six men have been detained in southwestern Pakistan on suspicion of murder after a man and a woman were stoned to death for alleged adultery.

The two, both married to other people, were believed to be in their 20s or 30s.

Local officials said they were stoned by a mob on February 16 in a remote village of Loralai district in Balochistan Province, after being accused of having an extramarital affair.

Officials said the woman's father and brother, and the man's uncle and father had been detained, along with a cleric believed to have issued the order to kill them.

Another man linked to the cleric is also being held.

Hundreds of people are killed around the country each year in Pakistan in the name of defending family "honor," but stoning is very rare.
