A senior police official, Faisal Bashir, was quoted as saying the gangs exchanged heavy gunfire and fired rocket-propelled grenades.

The violence reportedly erupted after one of the gangs kidnapped a member of the other gang.

The fighting occurred in Lyari, an impoverished Karachi neighborhood where there is frequent violence involving gangs linked to criminal, political, and ethnic groups.

The port of Karachi is one of the world’s most populous cities, with more than 18 million people.
