Indian Woman Returns Home 12 Years After Wandering Into Pakistan

Deaf-mute Indian woman Geeta salutes the media before leaving for the airport from the EDHI Foundation in Karachi on October 26, 2015

A deaf-mute Indian woman who accidentally wandered across the border with neighboring Pakistan more than a decade ago has returned to Delhi to be reunited with her family.

The woman, identified only as Geeta, is believed to be in her early 20s and has been living in a shelter in Pakistan's Karachi since she strayed across one of the world's most heavily militarized borders in 2003.

She was unable to provide any information about herself, stymying efforts to locate her family. The Indian government, however, has identified her as a member of an unidentified family in Bihar state.

The woman will undergo DNA tests to confirm that the family is hers. She reportedly identified the family from old photographs.
