Pakistani security forces say they killed at least 17 militants in heavy overnight shelling in the northwestern Khyber tribal district.

Security officials said the militants were killed in the town of Bara on November 8 after security forces repulsed an attack by the armed men on a military checkpoint.

They said those killed were members of the Lashkar-e Islam and Tehrik-e Taliban militant groups.

Khyber is a semiautonomous tribal district on the Afghan border.

Militants have taken refuge in Khyber after fleeing Pakistani military advances in North Waziristan.

The Pakistani Army claims to have killed hundreds of militants in Khyber in recent months in an operation that has caused some 150,000 people to flee the area.
