Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made a rare visit to the country's restive tribal areas where he commended the army for reestablishing order.

Sharif praised the country's security forces for defeating militants in the North Waziristan tribal area, considered the main base for the Pakistani Taliban.

"Peace has been restored. It is because of the sacrifices of the armed forces," he said in a televised speech from North Waziristan.

He also encouraged the more than 80,000 people who were displaced in almost a year of fighting to return to their homes.

The Pakistani Army launched an offensive in North Waziristan in June to drive out militants.

The army has said it has cleared militants from most of the area.
