The Pakistani military says air strikes have killed 18 more militants in northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border as part of a major operation against the Taliban and other insurgents.

The attacks on August 18 took place in the Shawal area of the North Waziristan tribal region, one day after officials said strikes killed 50 militants.

The military said air strikes also killed some 40 gunmen on August 16.

The air strikes by the army are part of an offensive against militants in the region that began in June 2014.

The conflict zone is remote and journalists are not present, making it difficult to verify the army's casualty reports.

Pakistan has been battling an Islamist insurgency for more than a decade.

The military says more than 2,800 militants have been killed since the launch of the latest offensive.
