Pakistani police say they have found the bullet-riddled body of a kidnapped female health worker dumped in a field.

Salma Ghani, 32, was taken by five unidentified men from outside her home in the northwestern city of Peshawar on March 23.

Police official Rahim Shah told the French AFP news agency that it was "not yet clear" whether she was killed for taking part in a polio vaccination drive.

More than 50 people have been killed in militant attacks on polio teams in Pakistan since December 2012.

The Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups oppose the polio immunization campaign, saying it is a cover for U.S. spying.

Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are the only countries where polio remains endemic.

Pakistan recorded 91 cases of polio last year.
