Pakistan's Khan Leads Antigovernment Protest In Lahore

Supporters of opposition party, Tehrik-e Insaf burned tyres during a protest in Karachi on December 12.

Supporters of Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan have shut down major roads in the eastern city of Lahore in an antigovernment protest.

Dozens of members of Khan's Tehrik-e Insaf party burnt tires at different parts of major roads while waving flags and chanting slogans.

Khan claims Pakistan's 2013 general elections were rigged and has called for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign.

Officials said 15,000 police were deployed at Khan's demonstrations to prevent violence after clashes occurred at similar protests last week in Faisalabad.

Khan has vowed to shut down parts of major cities in the country in an effort to topple Sharif's government.

He led weeks of protests outside of parliament in Islamabad in August and early September in a failed attempt to get Sharif to resign.
