Two Pakistani soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on the outskirts of the country's northwestern city of Peshawar, an intelligence official told RFE/RL on October 4.

The Peshawar-based intelligence official said that a security forces convoy was on its way from Kohat to Peshawar when it came under attack near the Matani area late on October 3.

"Two soldiers were killed and five others injured in an exchange of fire," the official said. Six suspected militants were also killed in the shoot-out with security forces, he said.

The banned Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack and said two militants were killed in the firefight. The group also claimed that it had killed four soldiers in the attack.

Matani is located in the southeastern suburbs of Peshawar. The Taliban has increased attacks on security forces in Pakistan's tribal region.

Several peaceful rallies have also been held in all the tribal districts and some cities such as Swat and Dir where people have demanded that security and peace be restored in their respective areas.

Separately, police said they had killed four suspected militants in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
