Seven Pakistani soldiers have been killed by "heavy fire" along the border with Afghanistan.

Pakistani military officials said on October 27 that a military post came under fire early that day in the South Waziristan region.

It is unclear who initiated the gunfire, but Pakistani militants have been conducting cross-border assaults in the region in recent months since Pakistan deployed thousands of troops there.

In August, four Pakistani soldiers were killed in the region by a cross-border rocket attack.
