Three Pakistani soldiers have been killed and another one wounded in a militant attack in the North Waziristan tribal district, near the Afghan border, in the latest spate of attacks on security forces and government officials in the area, a senior security official said.

The soldiers came under attack by "unknown militants" at a military checkpoint in the town of Spinwam on July 5, the official told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault. A search operation has begun to hunt down the perpetrators, he added.

On June 20, a Pakistani soldier was killed in another attack in Spinwam.

On June 30, at least three members of Pakistani paramilitary forces were killed and three others wounded in a clash with militants in the South Waziristan tribal district.

The Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan, known as the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for that attack.
