Pakistani police say gunmen have killed a local employee of the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.

The man was identified as Iqbal Baig, a Pakistani national who worked for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency in the embassy.

Police said he was gunned down at his home early on July 26.

They are investigating several possible motives, including attempted robbery, sectarian killing, and extremism.

Baig belonged to a minority Shi'ite Muslim sect known as the Ismaili.

Ismailis largely live in peace in Sunni-dominated Pakistan, though Islamic extremists in the country view Shi'a as heretics.

Gunmen shot and killed 50 Ismailis in May in the southern port city of Karachi.
