Putin Hopes For Increased Cooperation With Afghanistan

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai that he hopes Afghanistan's next president will "do all he can" to promote cooperation with Russia.

Putin and Karzai met on May 20 in Shanghai where they will be attending on May 21 a regional conference hosted by China.

Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani will face off in the second-round runoff vote for the Afghan presidency on June 14.

The first-round vote was held on April 5. Karzai, who is leaving after serving his second term, is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.
