Sixty Militants Killed In Battle With Afghan Troops Near Pakistan Border

Afghanistan's intelligence agency says Afghan forces, supported by Western air power, have killed at least 60 militants during a battle in southeastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) said on April 30 that the fighting began when about 300 militants from the Haqqani network and other foreign fighters tried to storm the posts of Afghan troops in the Ziruk district of Paktika Province.

Afghan Defense Ministry officials say at least five Afghan soldiers were killed.

They say one Afghan soldier was abducted and six others were injured during the clashes.

Paktika shares a long and porous border with lawless parts of the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Foreign fighters and the Haqqani network, allies of the Afghan Taliban, are active on both sides of the border.
