At Least Eight Killed In Crash In Southwestern Pakistan

At least eight people have been killed in a traffic accident in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan Province on January 20, officials told RFE/RL.

Arif Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner of the Lasbila district, where the accident happened, told media that the accident occurred when a passenger bus traveling from Panjgoor to Karachi skidded off the road and ploughed into a security checkpoint.

Ahmad said two of the dead were checkpoint personnel. Another 22 people were injured in the accident.

Bad infrastructure, poorly maintained vehicles, and substandard safety rules cause numerous accidents in Pakistan and thousands of deaths every year, according to official statistics.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
