Afghan Parliament Dismisses Foreign Minister

Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani speaks during a high-level meeting on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 19.

The parliament of Afghanistan has dismissed three government ministers because of poor performance.

The legislature on November 12 voted to fire Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and asked President Ashraf Ghani to nominate a replacement.

“The respected minister of foreign affairs could not get a vote of confidence from parliament, so we request that the president introduces a new candidate to parliament,” speaker Abdul Raouf Ibrahimi told the parliament session after the vote.

Lawmakers also fired Public Works Minister Mahmud Balligh and Social Services Minister Nasreen Oryakhtel, accusing them of spending only 70 percent of the funds allocated to their ministries.
