12 People Killed As Train Derails In Southwestern Pakistan

An injured child victim of a train accident is rushed to a local hospital in Quetta, Pakistan, on November 17.

At least 12 people have been killed and some 70 injured when a train carrying about 300 passengers derailed in a mountainous area of southwestern Pakistan.

Baluchistan Province’s Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti said the accident occurred in the remote Bolan district on November 17 after the train's brakes failed.

The train was en route to Rawalpindi from Baluchistan’s capital, Quetta.

A military spokesman in Quetta said seriously injured passengers had been airlifted by helicopter to hospital.

Train accidents are common in Pakistan, where tracks are often poorly maintained due to corruption, mismanagement, and lack of investment.
